Our colleague from Makerere University, Dr. Richard Mugambe, presented results from a SaniPath Exposure Assessment performed in Kampala, Uganda during a session at the Stockholm World Water Week Conference entitled "Tools to Support Climate-Smart Sanitation Decision-Making for the Urban Poor". During the session, Dr. Mugambe spoke alongside speakers from the Global Water Pathogen Project and HyCRISTAL about how complementary tools can be used to address important public health questions, such as "What areas of the city are predicted to have the highest health hazard from exposure to excreta?" and "What interventions can be made to reduce health risks from exposure to excreta in the environment?". These study questions were addressed in a Kampala case study to demonstrate the utility of complementary tools for climate-friendly sanitation decisions.

World Water Week (August 2017)


At the 2017 World Water Week conference in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr. Christine Moe participated in a presentation that examined the intersection of urban sanitation and public health. Dr. Moe explained the rationale, design, and results of the SaniPath Tool and how public health principles are incorporated to assess risk of exposure to fecal contamination in urban low-income communities. The presentation discussed the value of incorporating public health principles in sanitation tools and how results can be used to influence policy. This event covered “solid and liquid fecal wastes, in sewered and unsewered settings” and aimed to focus on how pathogen flow factors could be incorporated into sanitation action and thinking.

Suraja Raj joined eight other WASH professionals to share and discuss their work relating to urban sanitation. This session included both presentations and discussions, and shed light on “the latest thinking on planning and delivery of sanitation city-wide.” World Water Week in Stockholm focuses on global water issues and is hosted by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).
